I have a particular fondness toward makeup because I likely have worn it more ways and on more days than most people I know. This fondness for makeup actually runs in my family. In fact, my sister Cindy is a professional makeup and hair artist that regularly works with chic 50 plus women. This is one of the reasons I have gotten the inside scoop over the years. Even as a kid, I followed her sound advice and looked up to her impeccable artistry and innovative flair. I am excited to share with you the tricks and tips I have learned over the years and adjustments I have made as my skin has changed.

Her advice to me now and always is to enhance the real beauty within you. Not everyone is as comfortable as I am experimenting with technique and application, but I have come to realize after a time that as I mature, the "less is more" approach works best on most occasions.

The billion-dollar beauty industry is inundated with products and advertisements that frankly can make your head spin. Just walking into a Sephora can leave you feeling flooded with choices. Youtube tutorials touting the latest glam look are everywhere, and while they are usually tailored to a younger audience, they are still overwhelming.

Here are a few shortcuts to help you navigate your everyday and special-occasion looks:

Start your canvas by moisturizing and using a primer to minimize pores and fill in fine lines. This way, your foundation will glide on smooth and deposit more evenly on your skin. It is essential to find a tone that is closest to your natural shade. Next, use concealer slightly lighter than your foundation on dark spots; steer clear of purple hues, but yellow or apricot tones are useful to hide blemishes or redness from broken capillaries.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but too much coverage can actually age you. Try a sheer look instead - I lean towards a tinted moisturizer in the summer months. For proper application, use a fluffy flat brush and blend towards the neck and ears - this will ensure a clean look.

The brows are a focal point, and they really frame your face. The skinny deer in the headlights is out, but it necessary to still keep them tidy and manicured. Frida Kahlo was stunning, but can you just imagine her with a proper shaping?! I use a clear gel to coat the eyebrow and eye shadow to fill in instead of a pencil.  Pencils can cause harsh lines, and we certainly aren't looking for anything harsh. Filling in your brows appropriately without overdoing it,  will accentuate the arch on top a little to make your eye appear more open.

Spend some time on your eyes; they can take the most time. I tend to use a neutral shade of taupe in the crease and cream in the middle of the lid. Blend the shadow until it fades in. Remember, a natural look is what you want to achieve. If you choose eyeliner on the top lid dot it along the lash line, then swipe and smudge and use a fine brush to merge into the lashes.

Mascara really should be applied carefully. Who can forget Tammy Fay? She must have needed a pressure cleaner to get it all off. I use a lash curler to give an extra lift and a primer to thicken then I wipe off the excess and wiggle the brush to evenly distribute.

Try using a cream blush and apply with an angled brush. I love peach and corals; they give a dewy, youthful glow.

For lips, I start with an anti-feathering pencil on the outer part of the lip line. I will apply a touch of my foundation for a lasting effect, then I softly line with natural shade and finally fill in with color. If I'm going to wear a bright color on the lip, I stick to matte shades. I have tried the lip plumpers, and while they really do work, I'm not down with something that feels like I just ate a habanero pepper. Expert tip: You can use a soft toothbrush to get rid of any dry skin before you apply.

Here are a couple things to watch out for:

  • Avoid shimmer on or around eyes as it can accentuate wrinkles.
  • Pressed powder is not your friend; it cakes up, and with our humidity, regular touch up is necessary. If you are going to use it, be sure to carry a small brush in your purse to stay on top of clean up.
  • Tone down the glossy lips and leave that to the tweens.

  • Hair is the frame to our Mona Lisa, so giving your mane a bit of attention each day says to the world I'm worth it. I must have worn at least 50 shades, and I have fun with all of them, but coloring can be harsh, so I trim my hair often. My texture has changed with time grey hair can become wiry, so sometimes I embrace that and wear it wavy, especially in summer, when I wash it more often. The purple shampoos get rid of brassiness and brighten the hue. Splurge on a great haircut, and then it is easier to maintain with less styling time.

My skincare routine is simple. I use micellar water to take off makeup and coconut oil to moisturize and exfoliate a few times a month. Cardio gets the blood flowing and sheds dead skin cells that keep my face looking firmer and plumper. Hydration is critical because we are 60 percent water. Drink up gals! I keep a bottle by my bed and one in the car; otherwise, I'd simply forget to keep drinking. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and Peptides are excellent tools to incorporate into your skincare regimen. Sun protection is available in such easy-to-wear formulas; however, I recommend looking for a mineral one that is PABA(para-aminobenzoic) free.

With a little extra effort, you will see results, and I promise people will notice when you go that extra step. No need to rock a smoky eye every day, but a pop of color just might brighten your day and possibly spread a smile.

Those skinny eye brows are all I have. … All my life…..

With grey hair, it is hard to find the proper color esp since I was blonde before I turned grey.

Agree with Patti……….. There is a “mature” audience out here that would love to see someone who looks like them, just saying.

When are you in Venice? Do you come to Anthony’s on a regular basis? You sound very convincing on make up applications without promoting specific products.

Thank you for easy and effective suggestions to incorporate into a beauty regime. Since the article was directed towards mature women, please consider using a mature woman as the model, instead of a young, non wrinkled lovely model!
